The Ceylon Journal of Science accepts original research articles in Science, especially in the subject areas of Plant and animal taxonomic descriptions, Tropical crop science and management, Post-harvest technology, Tropical Forestry and Agro-forestry, Fisheries, Tropical medicine, Natural products chemistry and bioactivity, food technology and food security, Renewable energy systems,, Nanotechnology and advanced materials, image and signal processing, Economic modelling and econometric analysis, Scientific approaches to human development issues, Tropical ecology, Climate change, Water resources and Environmental engineering, Conservation and management of natural resources and Sustainable development.
The journal also publishes invited lead articles, review papers, feature articles, short communications and book reviews. Manuscripts written only in English are accepted. There are no page charges for authors. The submission of a manuscript will be taken to imply that the work is original, and it or a similar paper (other than an abstract) has not been, and will not be submitted elsewhere for publication. The contents of the manuscripts are the sole responsibility of the authors.
All manuscripts are peer reviewed. Authors must provide the names of three potential referees with complete postal and e-mail addresses and telephone numbers. However, the editors are not obliged to obtain the services of the referees suggested by authors.
Preparation of manuscripts
Manuscripts must be typed using MS word, Times New Roman, font size 12 in double space throughout Title page, Abstract, Text, References and Tables. All abbreviations should be spelt out at first mention in the abstract as well as in the main text body. Thereafter, only these abbreviations are to be used.
Original research articles
These are detailed reports of original research and are classified as primary literature. Research articles should include the following: Title page, Highlights and graphical abstract (optional), Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgements, References, Tables and Figures.
Highlights are encouraged for this journal and consist of short sentences of 3 to 5 bullet points that convey the core findings of the article. Each bullet point must contain a maximum of 85 characters, including spaces. A Graphical Abstract, preferably in colour, is a pictorial and visual summary of the main findings of the article. This could either be a figure that is especially designed to convey the main findings of the article or one of the important figures from the article. It should capture the content of the article for readers at a single glance. The Highlights and the Graphical Abstract will be displayed only in the online version of the article, but will not appear in the printed version. A research article is generally limited to 10 printed pages.
Review articles give an overview of existing literature in a field, often identifying specific problems or issues and analyzing information from available published work on the topic with a balanced perspective. These are considered as secondary literature. Review articles should include an Abstract, an Introduction that outlines the main points, text under brief sub headings and references. The conclusion must discuss in detail the limitations of current knowledge, future directions to be pursued in research, and the overall importance of the topic. A review article is generally limited to 15 printed pages.
Short communications should contain novel findings written in the form of a concise, independent report representing a significant contribution to the field of study. It should be written under the subheadings as in a research paper but should include only few key references. It may include a 1-2 tables or figures and the word count should be confined to a maximum of 3000.
Research notes briefly explain new research findings.
Reviews of scientific books should be comprehensive and should not exceed 2000 words.
Opinion should be written on a topical theme in the form of a concise, independent report. It should not exceed 1500 words.
Commentaries and notes should address personalities and institutions of importance, appreciations and obituaries. Photographs can be included. It should not exceed 2000 words.

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
The Ceylon Journal of Science is a quarterly journal, published in March, June, September and December. The corresponding author should submit a soft copy of the manuscript (in word format) by e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org as well as one identical hard copy by post to the Managing Editor. Where relevant, the author(s) should provide evidence for an ethical clearance certificate obtained for using humans/animals in the experiment(s) that are included in the manuscript. Once the paper has been reviewed and the revised version (if necessary) is prepared by the authors, it should be sent, along with answers to the reviewers’ questions and comments by e-mail to email@example.com. Accepted manuscripts will be copyedited by the editors before sending it back to the authors for proof reading.
All manuscripts should be submitted to the Managing Editor, Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, University of Peradeniya, Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.
The copyright of all articles and illustrations published becomes the property of the Journal, but abstracting journals may reprint abstracts or translations thereof. Permission for any other reprinting should be sought from the Editor-in-Chief.
Five reprints of the published article will be sent to the corresponding author free of charge.
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
